ALPHA CHI OMEGA
WHAT OUR CHAPTER DOES TO HELP...
Philanthropy Week
Every year, each Greek organization on campus hosts a philanthropy week. During our philanthropy week, organizations participate in activities to benefit our local philanthropy, the Peace River Center. In previous philanthropy weeks, we have hosted a “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event, which consists of men strutting their stuff in heels to “take a walk in her shoes” and show their support in ending domestic violence. Donations, which include clothing and toiletries, are collected at our events for the Domestic Violence and Rape Recovery program at the shelter.
Take Back The Night
Every October, our chapter of Alpha Chi Omega invites a speaker to come to campus and share the truth about domestic violence. The night begins with stories of strength and survival, and is followed by our luminary project, a powerful march around Lake Hollingsworth to show the community that we are taking a stand against domestic violence.
Luminary Project
In observance of October being National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our chapter hosts an annual Luminary Project, in which we light up Lake Hollingsworth with luminaries to raise awareness for domestic violence prevention and honor survivors of domestic violence situations.
Healthy Relationships Week
Healthy Relationships Week occurs the week before Valentine’s Day. In order to promote healthy relationships and spread awareness about domestic violence, we hand out information about our philanthropy that provides guidelines for healthy relationships as well as statistics and resources regarding domestic violence. One of our favorite projects to do during Healthy Relationships Week is “Love Is…” which allows students, faculty, and the public to show their definition of love.
Throw Paint Not Punches
Throw Paint Not Punches is a campus favorite event that occurs in the spring. We invite students to come outside on Mr. George’s Green to throw paint, not punches. The event is intended to raise awareness for domestic violence and show that “these hands don’t hurt.” It is a fun and interactive way to get our community involved with supporting our philanthropy, and it is proved in our receiving the Philanthropic Event of the Year award for the two years we have hosted this event.
SPCA
We believe in giving a voice to those who can’t speak for themselves. For this purpose, we partner with the SPCA to support the animals in their shelters. Our chapter will make and donate toys to the Lakeland SPCA, as well as raise money to give the shelter new supplies and food for the animals. Our sisters love to visit the SPCA any chance they get to help out and spend quality time with the animals.
Pups and Pearls
For our Pups and Pearls event, our sorority partners with the Lakeland SPCA to bring dogs to campus to mingle and play with the Florida Southern College students. We offer food, drinks, and a “Puppy Kissing Booth” to raise awareness for our local SPCA shelter.
